As a community footy club, St Ives AFL is deeply aware of the impacts of the Covid-19 outbreak which is affecting our families, colleagues and friends.
Late yesterday, the AFL released guidance on this important issue which we support and encourage you to follow. It is attached for your reference.
At our club, you can expect to see the following, noting that the situation evolves daily and we will provide ongoing updates as required:
• Training will continue as scheduled for the time being. We appreciate some families may prefer not to participate and you’re welcome to opt out if you wish. Please make sure that children who are ill or have cold-like symptoms avoid attending training. As per normal practice, please let your team coach and manager know if your child won’t be at training.
• The Club will aim to provide hand sanitiser and soap at Acron Oval and Village Green to maintain hygiene standards.
• The Coaches & Managers pre-season meeting will go ahead at 7pm on Tuesday, 17th March. A senior AFL representative will attend the meeting to support our coaching staff with further guidance on the virus, and also to update on rules changes and new initiatives to support coaches and players.
• Thank you to the 24 families who have offered to participate in the half-time Auskick during Round 1 of the AFL (GWS vs Geelong) on 21st March. We will advise whether this will go ahead or not during the week when we hear from the AFL. In the meantime, if your child is ill or if you wish to opt out, please let Kirstie or Sally know.
• For the AFLX competition at Pennant Hills on 22/3 and any other pre-season games scheduled, we’ll follow AFL advice which will be updated frequently in the coming weeks.
• Round 1 of Auskick is due to start on 29th March and our Junior competition is due to start on 3rd – 5th April. Again, we will comply with AFL guidance which will be provided closer to the time as to whether/how the competition will proceed.
• We continue to drive recruitment activity, especially for 5 – 8 year olds in Auskick as well as our older teams. Please support the Club by continuing to encourage family and friends to sign up!
Please rest assured that your children’s well-being is always the paramount consideration for the Club’s Board and Committee. If you have any questions or suggestions, please let me know at president@stivesafl.com.
While this situation is very concerning for all of us, we look forward to kicking off the footy season when it is safe to do so. I’m in regular discussion with the AFL and they, like us, are continuing to work hard to prepare for a great season ahead.
I think it is fitting and appropriate that in their message they remind us that, “Our game is strong and resilient and we will work through whatever challenge is ahead of our football community.”
Thank you for your support and go Saints!
