In 2017 St Ives Australian Football Club embarked on a very bold mission: to bring Girls into the club, to play competitively and to give a positive experience that would stay with the girls for the rest of their lives. Two age-groups were started, an u12g’s and an u15g’s and the club set about asking Girls to come and play this awesome sport.
The inaugural season gave back to both age-groups in spades. Whilst the u12g’s had to play the same three teams for 16 rounds they grew into giants! The u15g’s team surpassed any expectation and took themselves to the grand finale, an experience none of the girls had had in any competition, in any sport.
2018 has come along and the club decided to expand. Five teams, across four age-groups has taken St Ives to a new level in its Fiftieth year. But what is even more astonishing and outstanding is the accomplishment of eight of our young women.
First, the Swans Academy has started a pathway for Girls in Aussie Footy and 6 St Ives Girls have shown their strength in the sport by being selected to attend.
Audrey Plumridge (aka “The Dre”), Allanah Barwell (aka Diesel), Charlotte Watton (Watto), Eleanor Smith (Taxi), Morgan Moss (Morgo) and Tali Sutherland (Tully) – we are so proud of your achievements!http://www.sydneyswans.com.au/news/2018-04-19/gallery-youth-girls-welcomed
In the older age-groups St Ives also has great representation: Hayley Yeomans (aka Knuckles) and Lauren Bird (aka Lozza or Fingers) were selected for the Sydney North AFL Academy Squad after trials in March 2018. Approx 100 girls trialled, of which 25 were selected. They then played against the other regional and two other Sydney based AFL Academies at the State selection trials in April at Lake Macquarie where there were approx. 250 players trialling for the NSW State team selection, for which Lozza was selected:
She has been selected to be in the AFL NSW/ACT U16’s Youth Girls Squad. This is an amazing achievement for Lozza, a second year player, and her drive and determination to succeed in her newly chosen sport shows that if you keep trying for something that you want, you stand a good chance of getting there.https://www.afldraftcentral.com.au/2018/05/17/nsw-act-weekly-wrap-u16-youth-girls-announced-strong-allies-u18-representation/?PageSpeed=noscript
…and we still have more to come!
